The 2020 Summer Impact Grant called for School of Design undergraduate students to imagine, develop, and deploy cutting-edge visual and interactive designs that have a positive cultural or social impact. My teammates of 4 and I developed a Toolkit for an Anti-Racist Community that facilitates dialogue and creates spaces for addressing difficult and uncomfortable issues with a conversation card deck; educates and empowers by establishing an online database and a community-run network of resources, and creates awareness and action with a line of wearables that advocate for social justice.
My part in the team was to create the packing design for the cards as well as design half the cover of the cards. My inspiration for the introspect and inquire card along with the theme of the cards was a mixture of tarot cards and playing cards. Looking back I had never seen prominent black figures on any card and wanted to create one.
Taking inspiration from the queen and king cards of a playing card I created a black queen and kind. Because we were also addressing Covid and race-related awareness I have feeding tubes around the man to talk about black mortality rates in America and gave the Black Power fists to speak on the important BLM movement.
